IPM Deputy Secretary-General Raffaella Ocone Assumes Role as IChemE's 84th President

Professor Raffaella Ocone, an inaugural member and Deputy Secretary-General of the International Panel of Mesoscience (IPM), has officially assumed the position as the 84th President of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). At a gala event held at the Royal Society of Chemistry in London, Professor Ocone delivered her presidential address entitled "Tackling Global Challenges, Delivering Global Impact: A Multiscale Approach".

In her speech, Professor Ocone systematically elucidated the pivotal role of multiscale methodologies in addressing global challenges. Drawing upon over three decades of research experience in complex systems modeling, she innovatively applied multiscale approach to the governance framework of IChemE, proposing a three-tiered governance model: the micro-level focuses on individual member development, the meso-level emphasizes enhancing synergies among Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and Member Groups, and the macro-level oversees the overall strategic development of the institution. She particularly stressed: "the mesoscale, that level that bridges single members with the institution, is crucial and that is where I would like to concentrate my efforts during the next year."

Using her own career trajectory as a case study, Professor Ocone provided an in-depth analysis of the dual strengths—both fundamental and transferable—of chemical engineering education. She highlighted that the multiscale thinking cultivated through such education enables professionals to adeptly navigate challenges spanning from molecular processes to industrial applications.

In her concluding remarks, Professor Ocone called upon all members to actively participate in this multiscale transformation, empowering chemical engineering to play a greater role in providing solutions to global challenges.

The International Panel of Mesoscience extended its warmest congratulations to Professor Raffaella Ocone on her appointment and expressed eagerness to deepen collaboration with IChemE in areas such as talent development and scientific innovation, jointly advancing multiscale research for global scientific and technological progress.
