MEET THE MEMBERS
Professor Batterham is Kernot Professor of Engineering at the University of Melbourne. Previously he was Global Head of Innovation and Chief Technologist, Rio Tinto Limited, President of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and President of the Institution of Chemical. He has had a distinguished career in research and technology, in the public and private sectors as well as extensive experience in policy development, both at the national and international levels. Professor Robin Batterham was Chief Scientist of Australia from 1999 to 2005 and is a Fellow by election of 7 Academies.
Marc-Olivier Coppens is Ramsay Memorial Professor and Head of Department of Chemical Engineering at University College London (UCL). He is the founding Director of the UCL Centre for Nature Inspired Engineering (CNIE), which was granted an EPSRC (UK’s NSFC) “Frontier Engineering” Award. He is most recognised for pioneering nature-inspired chemical engineering: learning from fundamental mechanisms underpinning desirable traits in nature to develop creative and effective solutions to engineering challenges. He is Fellow of AIChE, IChemE, cohhesponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences (Germany), and Qiushi Professor at Zhejiang University. He is Editor-in-Chief of Chemical & Engineering Processing: Process Intensification.
Valéria CSÉPE is research professor at the Research Centre of Natural Sciences (RCNS) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS), professor of cognitive psychology and neuroscience (Technical University of Budapest, University of Pannonia), and ordinary member of HAS and the Academia Europe. Her research focuses on the behavioral and brain correlates of typical and atypical cognitive development from infancy to adulthood. She served as deputy secretary General of HAS, being the first female in such a high position there. She worked for the strategic committee of the International Council of Science as elected member. She is president, appointed in 2016 and 2018, of the Hungarian High Education Accreditation Committee.
Statutory Professor of Chemistry at Oxford, previously Birmingham, Cambridge and Cornell (Fulbright Scholar, NSF Fellow). Co-Founder, first UK Interdisciplinary Research Centre (in Superconductivity) and UK Sustainable Hydrogen Energy Consortium. Currently establishing the International Centre for Carbon Neutral Energy with China, India, USA and Saudi Arabia. Past Chair, European Research Council Advanced Investigators Panel on Chemical Synthesis and Advanced Materials. Fellow of the Royal Society, Einstein Professor of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Foreign Member of German Academy of Sciences and US Academy of Arts and Sciences, International Member of American Philosophical Society. Interests: Turning carbon dioxide into fuel; Hydrogen and fuel cells; Decarbonisation of petroleum and other fossil fuels for the facile production of hydrogen.
Keith E. Gubbins is the W.H. Clark Distinguished University Professor at North Carolina State University. He also holds Honorary Professor positions at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Process Engineering (Beijing), Nanjing University of Technology and Cornell University (Ithaca, NY, U.S.A.). His research is in the application of statistical mechanics to problems in chemical physics and engineering, and has been recognized by several international awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship (Oxford University), the Lennard-Jones Prize (Royal Society of Chemistry, London) and the Rossini Award in chemical thermodynamics. He is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.
Renee van Kessel is an expert in the construction of inter-and multidisciplinary research consortia, tackling major challenges in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals. She is a Former Director at the Netherlands Research Council (NWO), former Governing Board member of the International Science Council (ISC) in Paris, member of the Board of Directors of START International in Washington DC, panel member of research programmes at the European Commission (EU) in Brussels, involved in many international programmes in the field of climate change (the Belmont Forum), infectious diseases (EDCTP), urban dynamics (joint Programming Initiative Urban Europe), brain and cognition (The Human Brain Project). Her drive is to find related grounds between sciences, stemming from a social science perspective (Leiden University) and established in a career in science administration.
Prof. Jinghai LI is currently the President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and a Vice-President of the International Science Council. From 2004 to 2016, he also worked as a Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Prof. LI established the Energy-Minimization Multi-Scale (EMMS) model for gas-solid systems, which has been extended to many different complex systems, and generalized into the EMMS paradigm of computation, focusing on the structural and logical similarity between problem, modeling, software and hardware. He has also been engaged in clean coal technology. Currently, he is devoted to promoting the concept of mesoscience as an interdisciplinary science. Prof. LI is the editor-in-chief of Particuology and sits on editorial committees for several international periodicals. He holds memberships of CAS, TWAS, SATW, RAEng and ATSE.
Raffaella is Professor of Chemical Engineering and the head of the Multiphase Multiscale Engineering Modelling research group at Heriot-Watt University. She is currently the EPSRC Established Career Fellow in Particle Technology. Raffaella worked in a number of international institutions and was the “Caroline Herschel Visiting Professor” at RHUR Universität, Bochum, Germany (July-November 2017) and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies at the Università di Bologna, Italy (March-April 2018). Her area of research is in the field of modelling multi-phase reactive systems. In The Queen’s 2019 New Year Honours she was appointed OBE for services to Engineering.
Dr. Paci is a Technology Director at National Research Council (CNR) of Italy in the Dept. of Chemical Sciences and Materials Technology. She was member of the International Task Force of the International Council for Science (ISC). She was member of the Advisory Board for H2020 Industrial Leadership LEIT-NMBP Programme of the European Commission (EC). She has research interest in knowledge management, strategic foresight and impact assessment of key enabling technologies. She is one of the authors of the EC Report 'Strategic Foresight for R&I Policy in H2020' (2015). Regarding Mesoscience she published a Commentary “A Research and Innovation Policy for Sustainable S&T: A Comment on the Essay ‘Exploring the Logic and Landscape of the Knowledge System’” (2018).
Joseph B. Powell (PhD) is Fellow and former Director of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and since 2006 is Shell’s Chief Scientist - Chemical Engineering, where over 30+ years he has led R&D programs in new chemical processes, biofuels, enhanced oil recovery, and currently advises R&D for energy transition to a net-zero carbon economy. Dr. Powell is co-inventor on more than 125 patent applications (60 granted), has received AIChE / ACS / R&D Magazine awards for Innovation, Service, and Practice, and is co-author of Sustainable Development in the Process Industries: Cases and Impact (2010). PhD: U. Wisconsin-Madison (1984); BS: U. Virginia (1978).
Prof. Dr Dr h.c Philipp Rudolf von Rohr studied at ETH Zurich and graduated in 1983. After a postdoc stay at MIT he started his industrial career with Bertrams where he became director in 1991. In 1992 he was elected as professor at ETHZ. His fields of interest covered a huge range from multiphase flow and high pressure processes to plasma enhanced processes and Milli reaction systems. In 2006 he received the honors doctorate from Slovak university and he became member of the Swiss academy of technical sciences. He was research council at Swiss national science foundation and expert within the commission of technology and innovation.
Graduate of University of Kaiserslautern, Germany in Chemical and Process Engineering in 1985 followed by a position at Amberger Kaolinwerke (mineral industry) in technical marketing. Return to University end of 1986 and PhD degree in 1991 on light scattering theory and particle measuring technology (Prof. F. Ebert). Post-doctoral associate at the University of Minnesota (Prof. Peter McMurry, 1992 – 1993) and guest scientist at the University of Duisburg (Prof. Heinz Fissan, 1995). In 1995 finishing the “habilitation” in particle technology and joining BASF SE working in environmental technologies and solid process engineering. Current position: Vice President Chemical & Process Engineering Asia/Pacific at BASF Advanced Chemical Co., Shanghai, China.
Richard A Williams is a professor of chemical engineering and the Principal and Vice Chancellor at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. He holds visiting professorial roles at CAS Institute of Process Engineering, Beijing and Tianjin University of Finance and Economics. He has research interests in energy storage and the measurement and simulation particulate systems. He is an academician of Royal Academy of Engineering, The Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and a member of advisory board for Carnegie Education Trust and board member of the British Geological Survey.
Richard N. Zare is the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor of Natural Science at Stanford University and a Chair Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Fudan University. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), and a foreign member of the Royal Society (London), the Indian Academy of Sciences, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is particularly proud to have received the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of the People's Republic of China.
